Different Times 2013–2018
They say different times call for different measures. It’s why since 2013, we’ve released a variety of editions of our Different Times t-shirt, modifying slogans and designs depending on the context of their release.
The idea for the original Different Times t-shirt emerged from our co-founder Johannes Breyer’s Bachelor thesis at the Gerrit Rietveld Academie, where he asked what it means to be a type designer today—with a mouse in your hand and keyboard at your fingertips. Two years later, we released the very first Difficult Times slogan tee in blue, and soon after in red, to remind ourselves and others that different times require different approaches. Cheesy, right?
To date, the series has featured five different digital versions of the ever-ubiquitous Times, including Times Ten, Times New Roman, Times LT, AT CG Times, and MT Times Bitmapped. All of these fonts are more or less identical, and therefore serve to undermine—or at least subtly derail—the message splashed across the t-shirt’s front, back, and sleeves.
For each new addition, the original template has been edited to reflect what’s going on during that particular moment—either in politics and culture, or the lives of the Dinamo team at large. In 2016, the Brexit vote and Trump’s election called for our stark black Difficult Times edition. A few months later, a light, sunflower yellow Spiritual Times marked the end of our short stay in Los Angeles, California (and one memorable trip to a psychic).
Most lately, in 2018 we teamed up with the Danish fashion label Wood Wood for Various Times to celebrate the five year anniversary of Dinamo. All of our past slogans featured across this white silkscreen on black fabric version, as well as one new slogan, “Quality Times,” to reflect the high-quality products of our collaborator.
