Stefan Marx Typeface & Book Launch @ Café Tiergarten 🌸
We’re inviting you to the launch of ABC Stefan, a typeface and artist book, where we’ll celebrate transforming the artist Stefan Marx’s iconic handwriting into a digital typeface.
We’ll be taking over the new Café Tiergarten in Berlin’s modernist Hanseviertel for Gallery Weekend, with a launch party starting at 4pm on May 2nd. We hope to see you there!
the event
ABC Stefan is our upcoming handwriting font — as well as the title of our new specimen-accordian-book hybrid designed by Simon Merz and veryes. The book examines what it means to take something as personal as an artist’s handwriting and make it accessible for others to use, with 2.5m of glyphs, a drawn A-Z, an essay by design writer and curator Billie Muraben and a poem-artwork by the grandfather of zine-making, AA Bronson.
At 6pm, Stefan and Johannes will perform a flip-chart spectacle touching on handwriting and type making. Kristin has organized us drinks, cake, a DJ set, and a pop-up Dinamo Editions/Stefan Marx bookshop that’ll be open all weekend. Stefan will also paint a mural.
Café Tiergarten is the new project by our friends Leonie and Simon from GROTTO, a cafe-and-event space which the pair have been renovating in preparation for this special launch (follow along with Simon’s YouTube renovation diary here).
Reopening soon: Café Tiergarten in the listed Schwedenhaus (Swedish House) building from 1957
Deep in renovation prepartions...

We often share links to upcoming events, launches, and things we’ve been enjoying on the internet. This time, Stefan shares his recent recommendations with us:
- A conversation I like to read at least once a year is between Sarah Crowner, and Christoph Keller. It’s from Dot Dot Dot and called ‘Right to Burn.’
- “To this day I wake up early and I have to get to my desk to write almost immediately. I mean fast. Before the demons get me.” This chat with Jerry Saltz for Longform is another one that I regularly return to.
- After the whole Super Bowl hype I came across this video of Kendrick performing at Best Buy at Union Square, from many moons ago, and it’s great to see, especially the security person. I think it shows so much.
- Flightradar24 is one of my favorite websites.
- Very often but at definitely every last day of the year, on Dec 31st, I listen to this album by Maher Shahal Hash Baz
- If you are in Hamburg on the 27th of April, come by the new exhibition of mine organized by Karin Guenther.
- If you are in Berlin before August 18th, It’s a Matter of Time is a beautiful show about temporality curated by Liberty Adrien and Carina Bukuts.
- Right now, I’m listening to the new Yo La Tango album a lot, the soundtrack to the movie Old Joy.
