Hi Friend,

Quite often, seemingly different typeface styles have a lot more in common than it might seem on first appearance. You just need to know how to look.

Keep this in mind as I introduce ABC Daily to you today, a type family containing two distinct sub-families: Slab and Scotch. The duo-genre system reveals the connections and similarities between these two seemingly opposing typeface styles; one known for flat-bottomed serifs, the other for its elegant, slender lines and teardrop terminals.

Styles like Slab and Scotch are actually two sides of the same coin, united by a deep genetic resemblance. ABC Daily ties these affinities together, revealing and highlighting the skeletal DNA that connects the two.

Designed by Dinamo team member Michelangelo Nigra, Daily contains four families with 32 styles; its dual nature makes it ideal for display and text applications. Both Slab and Scotch feature an Upright range from Light to Bold with corresponding Mono and Italics.

Wh-ait... “Daily Eye”?!

Round 2: Eyeball

Maybe getting a little lost in our own threads of connections, we created Dinamo Inc. Daily Eye autostereograms to commemorate this font release. Something about looking closely, and how one thing can actually contain two things, if you know how to look. All designed by Tina Lehmkuhl.

Stay with me now—and let’s dive into Daily further below. I will try to solve the Dinamo Inc. Daily Eye riddles at the same time. For those like me who are new to this and weren’t allowed to buy that Garfield Magic Eye book from the Union Square Barnes and Noble check-out area in 1995, reveal the hidden images by:

  • Step 1. Look “through” the patterns and let your eyes un-focus
  • Step 2. Adjust your vision to “see” the 3-D reveal
  • Step 3. Still failing? Scroll to the end for the solutions (one way of guaranteeing time on page)
Back to the Font

Apart from its Scotch-or-Slab dual capabilities, Daily as a whole features generously wide serifs set against relatively narrow letterforms. The uppercase letters, like its distinctive “M, are unusually compact—the opposite of what you’d typically associate with uppercase forms.

Notice how Daily’s teardrop terminals are also present in both subfamilies but in different ways. In the Slab style, due to its low contrast, the terminals almost appear round and monolinear. This look is reversed in the Scotch style, where the same treatment combined with higher contrast makes the drop terminal stand out more prominently.
