You’re invited to the launch of ABC Stefan, a new typeface and corresponding artist book. We’ll be celebrating digitizing artist Stefan Marx’s iconic handwriting into a publicly available typeface.

For the event, we’re taking over the new Café Tiergarten in Berlin’s modernist Hanseviertel for the whole Gallery Weekend, with a launch party starting at 4pm on May 2nd. We hope to see you there!

the event

ABC Stefan is our upcoming handwriting font — as well as the title of our new specimen-artist-interview-book hybrid designed by Simon Merz and veryes. The book examines what it means to take something as personal as an artist’s handwriting and make it accessible for others to use, with 2.5m of glyphs, an A—Z of drawings, an essay by design writer and curator Billie Muraben and a poem-artwork by the grandfather of zine-making, AA Bronson.

At 6pm, Stefan and Johannes Breyer will perform a flip-chart spectacle touching on handwriting and type making. Kristin Krause has organized a small exhibition, drinks, cake by Anaïs Nyffeler, a DJ set by Michael Satter, and a pop-up Dinamo Editions/Stefan Marx bookshop — the ABC Reading Room — which will be open all weekend (May 2-4). Stefan will also paint a mural.

Café Tiergarten is the new project by our friends Leonie Herweg and Simon Freund from GROTTO, a cafe and event space that the team have been renovating in preparation for this special release (you can follow along with the renovations via Simon’s YouTube diary).

Reopening soon: Café Tiergarten in the listed Schwedenhaus (Swedish House) building from 1957

The Café T team is Simon, Leonie, Sophie Kretzschmar & Nicolas Mertens
